Cheap Sunglasses

Did you know Cheap Sunglasses actually cost you more in the long-run? And no, I'm not just talking about your wallet/pocketbook.

Jeff Tyson wrote a great article on HowStuffWorks.com entitled "How Sunglasses Work". In it he explains the four things a GOOD pair of sunglasses should do for you:
  1. Sunglasses provide protection from ultraviolet rays in sunlight
  2. Sunglasses provide protection from intense light
  3. Sunglasses provide protection from glare
  4. Sunglasses eliminate specific frequencies of light
Jeff states that "when you buy a cheap pair of sunglasses, you often give up all of those benefits and can even make things worse." Check out the rest of this article, and when you're ready, stop by one of our locations in Atlanta or purchase a good, quality pair of sunglasses online from SunglassWarehouse.net. Your eyes will thank you!

Sunglass SOS

Yesterday upon leaving work, I put on my trusty sunglasses that I keep in the car knowing they'll probably get a little banged up but are perfect for driving around town. Once on, I noticed the right lens seemed a little smudged, so at the next red light, I tried to clean them off repeatedly with no luck. After further inspection, I noticed the smudges were in fact about 8 tiny scratches and were certainly not coming off no matter how much I huffed and buffed.

This made me very sad as this particular pair of sunglasses is one of my favorite pairs of Oakley sunglasses ever owned and I had two choices:
  1. To continue wearing them and ignore the little smudge-like scratches
  2. To send them to the graveyard of sunglasses past (May they Rest in Peace)
As the depressing music began to sound in my head, it hit me... OPTION C! I can replace the lenses and still keep my favorite pair of sunglasses! There was no need for straining to see through the scratches or tossing them our with yesterday's dinner. HORRAY! My Oakleys would see the light of day again!

This may sound like a tall-tale, but I assure you, simply replacing the lenses is a great way to restore those old-faithfuls you keep lying around in your car or gym bag. Don't believe me? Check the lenses out for yourself!

It is best to clean and wash your sunglasses on a daily basis. Dish washing soap removes body oil on the lenses, nosepads, hinges and screws. Ever notice how your nosepads turn an ugly greenish hue? This is caused by chronic build up of body oil. Similarly body oil in the screws & hinges loosens them.

With golf tournaments heating up just like the weather, every golfer weather for sport or fun is dusting off the polo shirts and khakis and hitting the course.

There's one item most people don't think to consider when out on the range or golf course: Sunglasses. Most golfers remember to wear their hats, as hats help shield heads, ears, and faces from the sun. However, they don't offer optimal protection for your eyes.

Sunglass Warehouse offers some great brands and styles that will be light on your face while protecting your eyes from the sun. A few of our favorites include: Oakleys, Costa Del Mar, and Ray Ban.

Sunglasses at Night: The Origination?

I just stumbled upon this video on YouTube released in 1984, and I hate to say it but everyone who thought they were starting a new trend the past few years were about 25 years too late. Not only did Corey Hart make wearing "Sunglasses at Night" a hot trend but he also made Wayfarers cool. See below for evidential proof:

I have a confession to make...

So you know the old saying about "practicing what you preach"?

Well, my brilliant self had a meeting this morning and forgot my sunglasses for the hour drive there and hour drive back. Now, I have a headache and my eyes are aching from straining to see through the glare of the sun in the windshield.

Please let my mistake help you learn a lesson to not forget sunglasses when going outside, ESPECIALLY for those longer drives!

Hope everyone had a good weekend! I'm off to locate some aspirin...

Age Old Question - Answered!

Alright alright, you've waited long enough.

Now that you have determined your face shape, it's time to put two and two together and figure out what sunglasses work best for each shape.

Let's break it down by each face shape:
  1. Oval - If this is your face shape, you're luck! Just about any frame shape works best with your face shape... BUT be sure to avoid over-sized sunglasses. Some sunglasses we recommend for you are Oakley Half Wire , Lacoste LA12419, and these polarized Ray-Bans aviators.
  2. Round - Those of you who fall into the round face shape category look good in most frame shapes as well. However, it is best to avoid round frames which will make your face look rounder. You want to accent your features and angular/geometric shaped glasses will help! We highly recommend these Top Bar Square Ray-Bans.
  3. Square - On the contrary to people with a Round face shape, square face shapes are PERFECT for rounded sunglass frames but not angular frames. These Ralph Lauren sunglasses and Prada sunglasses are ideal for square face shapes!
  4. Long/Oblong - If you have an oblong face shape, it is best to avoid short frames as they accentuate your longer face. It is best to choose sunglasses with tall frames such as these Ralph Lauren sunglasses.
  5. Heart - Heart-shaped faces are a little more of a challenge to find the perfect frame for your face. Look for frames that are heavier on the bottom to add width to the lower face and soften the forehead. Sunglasses such as these D&G sunglasses and these Arnette High Roller sunglasses.
It's not always easy to pick the best pair of sunglasses for ourselves, but if you refer to the above information and our Sunglass Warehouse post on face shape, you will be well on your way to looking good while protecting your eyes!

Age Old Question

What Sunglasses work best for YOUR face shape?

Before we can answer that question, we must determine what your face shape is. There are 5 main shapes that you could fall into...
  1. Oval - Oval face shapes contain a slightly narrow chin and higher cheek bones. The face is mostly proportional. Celebrities with this face shape include: Charlize Theron and Beyonce.
  2. Round - Round face shapes contain full cheeks, a rounded chin and very few angles. Celebrities with this face shape include: Kelly Clarkson and Kate Winslet.
  3. Square - These faces are quite angular with a strong jawline, square shin, and wide forehead. Celebrities with this face shape include: Demi Moore and Sandra Bullock.
  4. Long/Oblong - These faces are longer than they are wide. Long faces also include angular shapes, longer noses, and tall foreheads. Some notable celebrities with this face shape include: Sarah Jessica Parker and Paris Hilton.
  5. Heart - Heart-shaped faces tend to have broad foreheads, somewhat wide cheekbones, and pointy, long chins. Celebrities with this face shape include Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Lopez.

Alright, now that the face shape question has been resolved, time to select the best style sunglasses for Y-O-U!

... thought I'd tell you now didn't you? Well you're going to have to stay tuned to the next post answering that "Age Old Question"!

Sunscreen For Your Eyes

Did you know that sunglasses are like sunscreen for your eyes? Cheaper sunglasses may mask the brightness of the sun but they don't in fact protect your eyes from the harmful UV Rays. When considering items to save or splurge on, sunglasses without a doubt fall into the splurge category. A good pair of sunglasses (saying you don't sit on them or run them over) can last you YEARS. Let's break this down mathematically...

Say you spend $40 on a cheap pair of sunglasses that only last you a couple of months, compounded over 20 years, that's $800 on glasses you would be spending on top of trips to the eye doctor for eye glasses/contact lenses as a result of the lack of UV protection.

However, say you spend $120 every four years on a good quality pair of sunglasses with optimal UV protection. That equates to about $600 over 20 years and you won't be needing to constantly be worrying about your vision fading as a result of direct radiation from the sun.

Given those two options, the choice is easy: SPLURGE and save your eyes! Don't forget! Unlike singlasses, we only get one pair for our entire lives.

Do you wear your sunglasses at night?

Ever since popular rap/hip-hop and "new age" music videos have hit the television, a new trend of wearing sunglasses at night has reached an all-time high. No matter what style or shade, the trend has become acceptable at numerous events or just for going out for a night on the town, and depending on a person's crowd, wearing sunglasses into all hours of the night can either increase or decrease his or her "coolness" factor.

It is a little curious though as to who/what started this ever-so-popular trend... Could it be Stevie Wonder always wearing his shades while playing the piano? or possibly the bright lights that flash in clubs? or something else?

Please let us know your thoughts and most importantly... Do YOU wear your sunglasses at night?

Below is a list of all sorts of nicknames for sunglasses. What do you call yours? Have I missed any?

  1. Shades
  2. Sunglasses
  3. Specs
  4. Sunshades
  5. Peepers
  6. Stunna shades
  7. Hater Blockers
  8. Sunnies
  9. Spekkies
  10. Glares
Please let me know if I've missed any and we'll add them to the list!

Did Top Gun make Aviators popular?

After the movie Top Gun was released in 1986, a surge of desire to be like "Maverick" and "Goose" hit the nation. It was suddenly uber cool to be a pilot. Let's face it, what man doesn't want to wear a leather jacket, ride a motorcycle, and have beautiful women flocking to you at your becking call?

Now, while actually becoming a pilot, learning to ride a motorcycle, and singing "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling" on key may not be the easiest tasks in the world, there is one aspect that rounds the entire image out: Aviator sunglasses.

There is absolutely no training required to own a pair of Aviator sunglasses, and pretty much everyone who puts on a pair, males and females alike, instantly become "cool". Lucky for us, this phenomenon has withstood time and holds true even today.

There's only one important question left to ask: Do you feel the need, the need for speed?

Over and out Ghost Rider!

UV Radiation and Your Eyes

Many people have heard of UV Rays and that they can be harmful to not only your skin but also your eyes. However, most people don't know the specific effects UV Rays have on vision.

UV Rays can cause eye damage, including cataracts and blurred vision. Many factors contribute to how sensitive your eyes are to the sun:

  1. Time of day - Your eyes are most susceptible to damage when the sun is highest in the sky, typically between 10am and 2pm.
  2. Altitude - Picture this: the higher up in altitude you go, the closer you are to the sun... and thus, the greater impact UV Rays have on your eyes.
  3. Geography - We all know that things heat up as you get closer to the equator, as does the severity of UV Rays.
  4. Medications - Make sure you read the bottle of your prescriptions and OTC medicines to see if they impact your eye sensitivity.
Long story short, don't go hiking the northern Andes mountains between 10am and 2pm while taking birth control... Kidding aside, live your life and enjoy the outdoors. Just make sure your eyes are protected!

For optimal protection while being active outdoors, try to find sunglasses with 100% UV protection with a close-fitting style. We highly recommend brands such as Costa del Mar and Oakley for our active outdoors customers.

Raise your hand if you have the winter blues?

Don't worry. You're not alone. The good news is that Spring is just around the corner, which means more time spent outdoors and SUNSHINE. More time in the sun means you will want to protect your eyes from those pesky UV rays in style.

Below are 5 questions to consider when selecting the right sunglasses for Y-O-U:

  1. Will I be wearing my sunglasses for fashion or function?
  2. Do they need to stay firmly on my head during wear?
  3. What color frames am I looking for?
  4. Will the lenses need to be prescription?
  5. What is my budget for purchasing new sunglasses?

Once you have the answers to the above questions, you will be able to narrow your search significantly and find the pair of sunglasses that works best for you.
